Q: Are my retirement benefits taxed?

A: HMEPS benefits are generally subject to federal income tax. A portion of each benefit payment may be excluded from federal income tax if you made contributions to HMEPS on an after-tax basis. If you live out of state after you retire, you should research the tax laws in your state and community of residence.
